Day 2: The journey

Cait here.

Well we got through the trip..and not bad at all. First stint was 12 hours to Hong Kong. Tom managed one hour sleep and woke up ready to start the day with a smile. Sarah got about 2 hours. A bit surreal being served breakfast before we landed when it was about midnight UK time.

A quick mad dash around HK airport, the kids were buzzing around the place and in great form.

Stopped off for some essentials..........

Second leg was a mere 8 hours in comparison. After the umpteenth meal, I hit a wall and had to sleep. Last I remember was Tom talking excitedly about some islands he could see. While we all slept for a couple of hours, we think Tom was on the loose and this is when he worked his charms on the air hostess:) and whoever else he talked too. Tom decided it was too much to expect someone to sleep in a chair. When I woke up, saw that we were past Darwin with 3 hours to go. The first words out of my mouth were "that's a lot of brown", it was amazing to see the vast spaces with nothing in it bar a few sandy ridges and the odd road.

We were both waiting for Tom to crash with tiredness but he just keep going and was still in good form. Tom had embraced the new time zone much better than his parents! I was relieved that Tom was awake to see the flight crew trip that he wrangled. The cockpit was smaller than you'd think and Tom resisted the temptation to push any buttons (that's a first!). The pilot and all the quantas staff were all friendly and was a great introduction to Oz. Same with customs and immigration (unlike the humourless US). Luckily was just a quick walk to the hotel and a hot shower and bed by 11pm. Had a good rest. Tom got the best sleep and slept through until 8am. Sarah woke up 4am ready to start the day but was persuaded to sleep some more. She was last to wake at 930am with a huge smile and asked "are we there there yet?"! Stuffed ourselves on the buffet and now ready to set off to the beach! A balmy 22 degrees outside :)
