Must say, wished we had booked more YHA for the trip. They are ideal for travelling with kids.Tom has dubbed them 'hotels with kitchens'. Almost hotel like except for having to strip the sheets from the beds. 10am seems to be the checkout time everywhere so good for Wheatley's as no excuse to loll about in our pjs.
Our first stop was the Victorian Market a few minutes walk from the hostel. It was a riot of colour with every fruit and vegetable imaginable. You could buy anything here but I still couldn't find a sun hat I liked (not that I got a lot of time to browse!)

Now Oprah is here, there's talk of banning these......

Time for a quick mini latte....

We boarded the free circular tram with the intention of listening to the freebie commentary on the sights.

All was well until a group of teenage school kids got on the next stop drowning out any chance of hearing anything. The girls had those uniforms that you see on all the aussie soaps. There is something wrong with seeing an almost grown man dressed in shorts like a little school boy!
We got off at Federation square which has a very interesting architecture. The cityscape from this vantage point looks almost cartoon like.

A giant TV(a very happy Tom!)

And deck chairs for people to watch.

The salvation army band were playing Christmas carols, this chap looked bored collecting cash. There's something wrong with all this Christmas stuff in the blazing heat.

Lunch....

.....then off to a movie exhibition. It included internet and video games, so Tom and Rob were happy.

Got to play on the first Atari console and on every one in-between up to a modern PC. The Commodore 64 was bust though.
Here are family attempts at Matrix style videography:

Time for some altitude, so up 88 floors up to Eureka Tower's sky deck. Lift goes at 9m/sec.

In the background of this one is Melbourne Cricket Ground "The G" and the blue things that look like swimming pools are where they play the Ausie tennis open.

Windy up here and outside.

We were having such a gay time!!

Above is the last known picture of Tom with his hat. We noticed it missing when back on terra firma. Asked nicely and mother and kids went up in the lift again but no sign of said hat :( But at least we had another go in the speedy lift. Back through the now closed market to pick up the car and move onto our posh apartment.
A bit of a difference to the throng of earlier.

It turns out that the new apartment is just a couple of minutes from the YHA and very nice it is too.

Of course, the kids wrecked the place within minutes.
That evening we hooked up with an old friend from Brighton - Chris Hardy. Not seen him for 14 years, so we had a lot of gossip to exchange. Take out Thai and beers were on the menu.
