Day 7: Biblical Forces

The day starts off in irony. Our first nights sleep with no interruptions. When the kids woke, Tom made Sarah breakfast and they played in silence not waking us. The irony....... we needed to be up and out this morning as we were leaving Anglesea to move along the coast to Apollo Bay.

So we were in a bit of a rush, but couldn't leave without Tom saying goodbye to his new friend, who had strangely dressed the same as him this morning.

Tom left his friend's cabin in tears. I told him he'd make new friends along the way, but it turns out he was crying because there was a new episode of Scooby Do on the TV and he was going to miss the end!! Oh well.

The urge for coffee took a hold around 11 (this time ordered a double to make up for the size) so we stopped in Lorne on the way at a cafe that has a unique way of dealing with unruly kids:

It's here where we hatch our new plan. Driven by biblical forces (floods coming in from the west and a plague of locusts form the north- I kid you not) we decided to cancel tomorrow evening in Port Campbell and head to Melbourne a day earlier than planned. Maybe we will bump into Oprah and her audience as this is the week they are here.

After lunch we move on to our new digs. Boy, have youth hostels come along since the days of sharing racks of wooden bunk beds in old draughty buildings in the Peak District. This one is very smart indeed.

Here's one of the two communal kitchens.

The living room with large wood burning stove (not sure why you'd need it most of the year)

And our room.

They've gone for a 'loft' look with exposed brick. A better word would be 'unfinished'.

A Late lunch then off through the Otway rain forest to (yet another) lighthouse. Tom has taken a shine ('shine' - get it?) to these.

Passing through the forest, we bump into a couple of these fellas...

So thats a bit more wildlife to tick off the list.

Now chilling out back at the hostel with the yoofs. Well, 80% youth, the rest are 'silver surfers' with me and Cait filling the gap between the two. A pack of 3 late teenage girls seems to be the standard youth makeup, not that I paid much attention........

Tom wants to learn to play chess later, one of us will leave in tears.......

-----Cait edit------ Meanwhile while Rob chills' in the hostel, mother is entertaining the kids at the local park and observing the dark storm clouds on their way in...The weather has been much kinder than expected today, hopefully we will avoid the 30 mm of rain predicted.

  1. A plague of locusts.....that would be something different! Not many people get to see that on a holiday.

  2. We ran away. The news shows kids running through a soup of them with tennis rackets, not that I think they're making much of an impact!
