Day 16: Drive to Byron Bay

More driving in the sun. Stopped to replace my sunglasses (now on my 3rd pair) then onto Byron Bay. Tom gets a new pair too. We only blew through as our holiday cottage is at Broken Head the other side of the town on the beach. Tom misplaces his hew sunglasses almost immediately in the Tourist Information, like father like son (got them back though).

Played petrol roulette on the way as low fuel warning had been on some time.. Caitriona started reading the manual as we drove which stated the capacity was 73 litres, when we filled up we managed to put in 72.2 litres, no idea what she was worried about.

1st impressions is that it's a lively backpackers place. Lots of 'young' people (I guess I'm getting old if I say things like that now) milling about half dressed (now that I do agree with) plus loads of new age crusties.

We've spent all the money on the pre-paid credit card, so I tried to get cash out on my regular current account card. That was refused, so I tried again for a lower amount, also refused. Sso I tried a different ATM. Refused! 2 calls to the bank (helpfully, the international emergency number they give doesn't actually work so I had to call the UK only number which did...??) and I'm told that my card has been reported stolen and they need to send me a new one. Thanks, like that's going to work! Anyway, given my 'situation' they would remove the block for 24 hours, but I'd have to call each time I wanted money, even though my card has clearly not been stolen. Arghh!

We've touched down at the cottage now, unpacked but not got out yet due to another tropical storm. Once it clears up we'll get down the beach and chill for the remainder of the day (we lost an hour due to the time zone shift as we passed into NSW).

Early evening walk on the beach...
